FD-258 Overview

What Is an FD-258 Fingerprint Card?

FD-258 is an FBI applicant fingerprint-card format used by many government agencies, licensing boards, employers, and other organizations that require physical fingerprint impressions. The correct card format and submission procedure are determined by the organization requesting your fingerprints.

Physical Fingerprint Card

Your rolled and plain fingerprint impressions are placed on a physical applicant card rather than electronically transmitted through California Live Scan.

Common for Out-of-State Requirements

FD-258 cards are frequently requested by licensing boards and agencies outside California that cannot receive a California Live Scan transmission.

Your Agency Controls Submission

The requesting organization determines how many cards you need, where they are sent, what information belongs on the card, and whether additional forms or fees are required.

FAQ

FD-258 Ink Fingerprinting Questions

Quick answers to common questions about physical fingerprint cards and your appointment.

When do I need FD-258 instead of California Live Scan? ⌄
FD-258 or another physical fingerprint card is generally used when the requesting organization cannot receive a California Live Scan transmission or specifically instructs you to submit a physical card. Follow your agency’s written instructions.
Do you provide FD-258 cards? ⌄
Yes. We keep standard FD-258 applicant fingerprint cards available. If your requesting organization supplied a pre-printed card with specific information already entered, bring that card with you.
How many FD-258 cards do I need? ⌄
The requesting organization determines the number of cards. Some applications require one card while others request multiple sets. Check the instructions before your appointment whenever possible.
How long does an FD-258 ink appointment take? ⌄
Most appointments take roughly 15–20 minutes, depending on how many cards you need and how easily your fingerprint detail can be captured.
Do you mail my fingerprint cards for me? ⌄
No. We return the completed fingerprint cards to you. You are responsible for sending them to the correct requesting organization with any required application materials or payment.
Can I reuse an old fingerprint card? ⌄
Do not assume an old fingerprint card can be reused. Agencies generally require current fingerprint impressions for a new request. Follow the instructions for the specific application you are completing.
What if my fingerprints are difficult to capture? ⌄
Worn, dry, light, or damaged ridge detail can make fingerprinting more difficult. Our technicians take care to capture the clearest impressions possible and may repeat impressions when needed.
Can you fingerprint me for a personal FBI Identity History Summary? ⌄
We can take fingerprint impressions for federal background-check requests, but the FBI currently publishes the FD-1164 form for a direct personal Identity History Summary request. Bring your FBI, channeler, or other submission instructions so we can use the fingerprint-card format required for your request.
Can I bring a card from another state or licensing board? ⌄
Yes. If the agency mailed or provided a specific fingerprint card, bring it with you. We can review the card and fingerprint you according to the instructions provided.
Do you offer print-to-card as an alternative to ink? ⌄
Yes, we also offer FD-258 print-to-card for agencies that accept digitally captured fingerprints printed onto a physical card. Some agencies specify ink only, so check your instructions first. View print-to-card details.
Before you submit your cards: Pasadena Live Scan Service fingerprints and returns the completed card(s) to you. We do not decide whether a specific card format is accepted, determine your application eligibility, or control processing times. Verify the submission address, card type, payment, forms, and deadlines with the requesting organization.
