Documents We Commonly See
California notaries perform notarial acts on many types of documents. The document itself determines the required notarial certificate, and the notary cannot select that act for you.
Powers of Attorney
Documents authorizing another person to act on someone's behalf when the paperwork is ready for notarization.
Affidavits & Sworn Statements
Documents that may require the signer to take an oath or affirmation and sign before the notary.
Parental Consent Forms
Travel permissions, consent documents, and similar forms when notarization is required by the recipient.
Business Documents
Corporate, professional, authorization, and other business paperwork that includes a proper notarial certificate.
Other Notarial Documents
If you are unsure whether we can notarize your document, call before your visit and describe what the document issuer requested.
Acknowledgment or Jurat?
These are two of the most common California notarial acts. Your document, attorney, agency, lender, or receiving organization should tell you which one is required.
Identity + Acknowledgment of Signature
The signer personally appears, is identified by satisfactory evidence, and acknowledges having executed the document.
- The document may already be signed before the appointment.
- The signer must personally appear before the notary.
- The notary completes the required California acknowledgment certificate.
Oath or Affirmation + Signature
The signer personally appears, takes an oath or affirmation, and signs the document in the presence of the notary.
- Wait to sign the jurat document until you are with the notary.
- The notary administers an oath or affirmation.
- The notary completes the jurat certificate and applies the seal.
California Notary Fees
Our office keeps notary pricing simple: we charge $15 per document that needs to be notarized. We will review your paperwork with you before the notarization begins.
What to Bring
A little preparation helps your appointment move quickly and prevents unnecessary return visits.

- Your complete document, including all pages needed for the notarization.
- Qualifying identification for each signer who must be identified.

Avoid These Common Problems
- Do not leave required information incomplete or missing from the document.

- Do not expect the notary to explain legal language, prepare documents, or provide legal advice.

It depends on the notarial act. A jurat requires you to sign in the notary's presence. An acknowledgment may involve a signature that was already made, but the signer must still personally appear and acknowledge executing the document.
Common examples include a driver's license, state identification card, U.S. passport, or U.S. passport card. California law also permits certain other forms of identification when statutory requirements are met. Call us before your visit if you are unsure.
No. A California notary cannot choose the notarial act for you or provide legal advice. The document issuer, receiving agency, lender, or your attorney should tell you which certificate is required.

California notaries have limited authority to certify copies. For example, a notary may certify a copy of a power of attorney when permitted by law. Certified copies of many public records must instead come from the government agency or custodian that issued the record.
